The challenge

Amazon launched Amp, its live audio-streaming platform, with the goal of revolutionizing radio by offering a diverse range of shows. Amp allows users to access a vast music library (integrated via Amazon Music) to create DJ sets hassle-free, without concerns about buying songs or copyright issues. Users can effortlessly craft playlists, go live, engage with listeners, and even invite callers. Despite its promising start, Amp faced challenges a year later when its beta Home experience introduced a single-mode layout. This layout limited content visibility, with only 16% of users actively browsing content. This suggests that many users were not fully exploring Amp's offerings. The app's discovery features were still in development. Upon opening the app, users first see shows that are currently live on air, followed by scheduled future shows. However, there is no option to filter content by genre or topic. Although searching is possible, hosts must schedule shows for them to appear in the results. Overall, our platform lacks a cohesive and intuitive discovery mechanism, leading to a fragmented user experience. Early user research and testing revealed that users find it difficult to efficiently explore diverse content and navigate the app, which hindered engagement and satisfaction.

the process

We set out on a thorough redesign, not only refining the key components of our original home experience but also brainstorming and seamlessly integrating brand-new discovery features. The key challenge was to provide users with enough content to explore without overwhelming them. These updates are the first iteration towards a unified discovery CX and are the foundation for upcoming Explore features.

Music at the forefront

With our app's focus on audio content, we overhauled the Show tuner. This redesigned card feature allows users to listen to short snippets of live shows as they browse. We organized all show contents into a container to create a spatial relationship. Additionally, we introduced card peeks on both sides of the tuner to promote horizontal swiping and streamline content exploration.

Broadening Search and Discovery

We improved exploration and discoverability by introducing the option to listen to past shows, significantly enhancing users' opportunities to find content aligned with their interests. Expanding beyond live shows, we recognized the necessity for additional discovery methods. As a result, we implemented personalized carousels on the homepage, along with browsing by categories and search functionalities.

Conclusion

Discovery 2.0 achieved impressive results, doubling engagement and increasing Monthly Active Users (MAUs) by 35%. Incorporating engaging animations and thoughtful design choices, along with familiar visual patterns, significantly enhanced user interaction. Despite hoping for bolder design decisions, I'm proud of the redesign's substantial impact on all key performance indicators (KPIs). Personally, the project taught me valuable lessons in prioritization, maintaining high standards across our organization. The project's success was driven by collaborative efforts, with the whole company rallying behind a bold vision set by Design.
